Web services enable seamless communication and interoperability among heterogeneous systems over the internet. As their adoption increases across domains such as e-commerce, banking, healthcare, and cloud computing, ensuring secure communication becomes a critical concern. Web services are exposed to various security threats due to their reliance on open networks and standardized communication protocols such as SOAP, HTTP, XML, and JSON. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of security mechanisms employed in web services, with a primary focus on cryptographic techniques. Existing research works are reviewed and classified based on security objectives such as confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and authorization. A comparative analysis of commonly used cryptographic algorithms is provided to highlight their strengths, limitations, and suitability for different web service scenarios. The survey emphasizes the importance of hybrid security models that combine asymmetric and symmetric encryption techniques to achieve both strong security and efficient performance in real-world web service environments.
