DEPARTMENT OF ENDOCRINOLOGY

Vision Statement

To be a nationally recognized center of excellence in endocrinology, fostering innovation in clinical care, education, and research, while advancing the frontiers of knowledge in hormone-related diseases to improve patient lives.

Mission Statement

  • To deliver comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based care for patients with endocrine and metabolic disorders.
  • To train the next generation of endocrinologists through a rigorous, patient-centered, and research-intensive academic program.
  • To promote interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research that addresses current and emerging challenges in endocrinology.

Specialized Clinics:

    • GDM Clinic – Multidisciplinary care for gestational diabetes and pregnancy-related endocrine disorders.
    • Type 1 Diabetes Clinic – Focused management including insulin pump therapy, CGM interpretation, and patient education.
    • Osteoporosis Clinic – Integrated evaluation using DXA, bone markers, and tailored therapeutic strategies.
    • Thyroid Clinic – Dedicated to the management of nodular thyroid disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer follow-up.
    • Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic – Covers growth disorders, pubertal disorders, congenital hypothyroidism, and childhood diabetes.
    • Obesity clinic – Covers obesity related disorders, active weight loss programmes and management of metabolic complications arising out of obesity.

Academic Activities

  • DM Endocrinology Superspeciality Postgraduate Training Program
  • The Department of Endocrinology offers a 3-year Doctorate of Medicine (DM) superspeciality training program with an intake of 2 candidates per year, totalling six residents in training at any given time. The first batch graduated in 2024, marking a significant milestone in the department’s academic journey.

  • Clinical Training
  • Inpatient Exposure: Residents rotate through dedicated endocrine beds and endocrine consult services across general medicine, surgery, ICU, and pediatrics. They gain hands-on experience managing complex cases including adrenal crises, thyroid storms, pituitary apoplexy, diabetic ketoacidosis, and parathyroid disorders.
  • Outpatient Services: Extensive exposure to diverse endocrine and metabolic disorders, including diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, pituitary and adrenal disorders, metabolic bone diseases, gonadal and reproductive endocrinology, and pediatric endocrine conditions.
  • DM Dissertation Research: Residents undertake original research projects using state-of-the-art techniques, including molecular assays, advanced imaging, and big data analytics, often in collaboration with allied departments.
  • Interdisciplinary Meetings:
    • Pituitary Board – Joint discussions with neurology, neurosurgery, and radiology.
    • Endocrine Surgery Board – Regular interactions for perioperative planning and post-op follow-up.
    • Thyroid Board – Collaborative management of thyroid nodules and cancers.
    • Metabolic Bone Disease Forum – Includes endocrinology, orthopedics, nephrology, and nuclear medicine teams
  • Regular clinical case presentations , journal clubs and seminars on topics related to diabetes and endocrinology with both internal faculty led discussions and external faculty led CME/academic meets once in six months
  • The postgraduate trainees of the department have secured first and second positions in multiple national level conferences in diabetes and endocrine including ESICON 2024, Vellore Endocrinology Conference 2025 and Hormone Rhythm Karnataka 2024 , for their research work .

Diagnostic & Investigative Facilities

The department is equipped with advanced diagnostic capabilities to support both patient care and academic training:

  • Hormonal Assays: Comprehensive evaluation including dynamic testing for pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and gonadal axes.
  • DXA Scan: For bone mineral density and body composition analysis.
  • FibroScan: For liver stiffness assessment in metabolic syndrome and NAFLD.
  • Thyroid Ultrasonography & FNAC: Real-time evaluation and cytological diagnosis for thyroid nodules.
  • Point-of-Care HbA1c Estimation: Instant glycemic profiling at bedside.
  • Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy Testing: For evaluation of diabetic autonomic dysfunction.

Future aim :

The Department of Endocrinology stands as a model of academic and clinical excellence, committed to the highest standards of training, patient care, and research. With a robust superspeciality training program and a growing legacy of academic output, the department continues to nurture future endocrinologists equipped to lead in both academic medicine and clinical practice.
